Standard Overdraft Practice

Chase Overdraft Services

Standard Overdraft Practice

Our Standard Overdraft Practice may pay, for a fee, overdraft transactions at our discretion based on your account history, the deposits you make and the transaction amount. Standard Overdraft Practice comes with all Chase checking accounts except Chase High School CheckingSM or Chase Secure CheckingSM.

What’s covered?

  • Checks
  • Automatic payments from your checking account, such as a recurring phone bill, mortgage or utility bill
  • Recurring debit card purchases, like your monthly gym membership or movie subscription

What’s NOT covered?

  • We don’t cover everyday debit card transactions, such as grocery purchases, gasoline or dining out.
  • Sometimes we’re not able to pay an overdraft transaction. If that happens, the transaction is declined or returned unpaid. If we return an item unpaid, you may be charged a fee

What it costs

  • If an overdraft is paid, a $34 Insufficient Funds Fee is charged for each item.
  • If a check or automatic payment is returned, a $34 Returned Item Fee is charged.
  • The same check or automatic payment submitted multiple times by a merchant may result in both a Returned Item Fee and an Insufficient Funds Fee. If we return one of these items, we'll only charge you one Returned Item Fee for that item within a 30-day period.
  • There's a limit of three of either of these fees per day, for a total of $102.

When we don’t charge this fee

  • If we decline a recurring debit card transaction.
  • If your account balance at the end of the business day is overdrawn by $5 or less, or for items that are $5 or less.
  • We waive the Insufficient Funds and Returned Item Fees for Chase Private Client.
  • For Chase SapphireSM Checking accounts, we waive the Insufficient Funds and Returned Item fees if item(s) are presented or withdrawal request(s) are made against an account with insufficient funds on four or fewer business days in the past 12 months.
